Sing

I am anointed - took the crown

Just 10 years old i bussed to town

A boy soprano - a choir begins

Sweet is the sound but too scared to sing

Anglican union harmonise

Men Through the Fields and Wenceslas

To country chapels song we bring

I am at ease now I can sing

On the stage and on the walk

This is our conducted talk

Sweet the sound and melody

Just completes the fantasy

And now we are so old and wise

Disease contagion ostracise

Soul sequestered please stop all things

We cannot touch and we can’t sing

Sing from the top of your lungs from the top of your head

Like you’d never give up like you never did care

Sing - Video

Colm recalls an early childhood memory singing with a choir. Initially being almost too terrified to sing but slowly coming around to the idea with tours of churches and music halls around the country. The song traces that journey from muteness to confidence and the irony of a time, now, when we are (supposedly!) old and wise but have managed to create a world where singing is forbidden as a result of the pandemic. The sweet melody and piano line juxtapose nicely with grungy Sonic Youth guitars and rock drums evocative of Spiritualised.
