Route 1

Mechanical motion

The fall of the road and the touch of the wheel

The hurt of devotion

Of saying goodbye but not how you feel

Continuous white line

Rubber on road and the hope that it brings

Of putting in distance

Or running away from the truth of the thing

CHORUS

Well I did so well

Smiled once when the dusk came

But I broke the spell

Cause I thought of you outside Geraldton

Infinite sight lines

Driving so fast but can’t seem to arrive

Reading the road signs

And writing the script that is staying alive

Continuous white line

Rubber on road and the hope that it brings

Of putting in distance

Or running away from the truth of the thing

CHORUS

Route 1 - Video

A folktronic blend of electronic music and acoustic instruments - in this case a relentless 808 kick drum and a gentle flourish of Spanish guitar - provide the soundtrack to this aural road movie. With more than a nod to Beth Orton, the song is set in Western Australia’s Route 1 which connects Perth to the Northern Territories. Despite his best efforts, and the excitement of discovering a new frontier, our driver fails to shake off the ghosts of his past and is left with the uncomfortable truth that his journey is as much about escape as it is about discovery.
